History
Torre Grande castle has amazing views looking in the direction of Valencia, Alicante and Madrid and it was for this reason that it developed as a major strategical site.
The castle was mentioned as early as 1264 in connection with Alfonso the Wise and later played a major role in the battle of Almansa in 1707.
It was between "the hill of prisoners" and a stream at the bottom of the castle that 14,000 Austrian troops stopped from Caudete to be recounted.
In the great battle, boiling oil and stones were thrown from the medieval tower originally called "Tower of D.Enriquez" and was the very spot that English, Dutch and Portugese enemy troops capitulated, playing a key role in the beginning and the end of the battle.
It was this very scene that has been immortalized in the famous painting by Buonaventura Liglio of the great battle. It was again the centrepiece during the battles 300-year anniversary celebrations of April 2007.
Arca Homes will ensure this historical gem is beautifully restored to its former glory making this a truly unique resort with its own bronze age, Islamic and Roman sites adding to the glory of Torre Grande.
